Untitled PhotographsTower of Tauberg in BelkaPreface
A standout war photographer, Claus Bauer. He left behind many photographs of the Belkan War, and became a nature photographer in the postwar period. He left behind an invaluable journal and films from before and after the Belkan War that were only rediscovered this year. His eldest son, Niklas Bauer, who is now active as a news photographer, is collaborating with him to release these photos now that 25 years have passed since the end of the war. Claus was also involved in the construction of Excalibur as a cameraman. This is the Belkan War as seen through his eyes. December 17th, 1989
Photographed by Claus Bauer Winter announced its arrival in Tauberg shortly after construction finished on the tower’s foundations. The thundering roar of daily construction reverberated throughout the summer, but as the door opened to the next season, the area became ominously silent. This work was already behind schedule by several years, finally reaching a point where the no.1 high power laser module could begin output tests. Behind the base, the snow-covered slopes of the Tauberg hills majestically stretch across the frozen air. As the temperature drops precipitously every passing day, so too will the snow reach its maximum coverage in the season to come, owing to Tauberg being a geological basin. As a result, construction is temporarily halted every winter, and the engineers returned to their hometowns last week. As for me, I'm not leaving with everyone else. Instead I plan on catching photos of snowbirds, and returning to my hometown after a week. Back home, my mother and little sister are looking forward to seeing me again. I’ll be showing my sister my pictures of the birds as soon as possible. May 16th, 1990
Photographed by Claus Bauer Construction resumed after the seasonal snow thaw. It’s progressing at a rapid pace to make up for the winter delay. News has been circulating that conservationist demonstrators opposed to the base are growing with more and more people on a daily basis, and their influence is spreading through the cities. Many plants and animals found in Tauberg Forest are designated as endangered species, and the initial announcement of the base’s construction inspired a strong backlash from scholars. A thorough government inquiry claims that environmental damage can be avoided, but the conservationists are calling for a review of the plan. Some of the demonstrators have undertaken extreme measures such as stopping construction vehicles, and their actions are escalating every day. So, the situation right now is basically that construction’s not going on as planned. Today, there was a clash between the demonstrators and military security force, and the news is reporting that some people were injured. The government took control of the situation with a heavy hand, will be reinforcing the security forces over the next few days, and plans to restrict entry to the entire area of Tauberg. The military restricting public access may actually be beneficial for animals present in Tauberg, who are threatened by activities like hunting. October 8th, 1990
Photographed by Klaus Bauer The short summer of Tauberg came to an end, and one can feel a slight chill on the winds blowing down from the hills. I can see construction starting on a guard facility located on a hill that is beginning to show the colors of autumn. The mountainside has been precisely carved out, likely as storage for the weapons arriving soon. It seems like these foothills were one of the reasons such an inconvenient land was chosen for the facility. Positioned at the heart of the Principality, it can mount a strong defense against foreign aggressors; this rugged land is perfect. A few radar towers have gradually arisen. These towers detect and track foreign invaders. In spring, a towering amplifier that eclipses these radars will be built. I’ve heard that its height will actually exceed 1000 meters on completion. I wonder what the gallant figure of this tower rising into the sky will be like. I can’t wait to see it with my own eyes. June 12th, 1993
Photographed by Claus Bauer With the development of each section mostly progressing well, construction has begun on the amplifier located at the center of the six radar towers. It is difficult to carry materials to the top of this tower that already reached several hundred meters into the sky, so a special large crane is utilized for its construction, realized for high-rises that were thought to be infeasible at the beginning of the project. As construction progresses, I am overwhelmed by the height of the tower, which has exceeded the limits of my imagination. A young laborer named Albert who I’ve become quite friendly with over the course of this photography session told me this: “This tower is a symbol of Belka and will become Belka’s guardian angel. My family is proud that I’m involved in its development.” Thinking of his country with stars in his eyes, the young man was overwhelmed with a sense of duty, as though this tower bore the weight of the very notion of Belkan strength. On the other hand, I’ve found myself becoming more anxious every time I see it, constantly reaching higher into the sky. ...is this tower really a “symbol of Belka”? Or will it become a modern Tower of Babel and, like that symbol of chaos, invite destruction and summon disasters. To be honest, sometimes when I lay eyes on this tower, I’m not sure what it is I’m looking at. August 9th, 1993
Photographed by Claus Bauer Though the rain began as a drizzle, it gradually gained momentum and was accompanied by a tempestuous afternoon. Construction was canceled, but while everyone scrambled to their lodgings I put on a raincoat and rushed out into the storm as thunder echoed the lighting strikes seen through my camera. It was an action that I did not even understand myself. Climbing a hill and turning around, half of the tower was concealed in a rainy haze; it stood so ominously tall that its tip was invisible to the naked eye. My fingertip on the shutter button trembled terribly from the cold, but was too absorbed in shooting to notice. At some point in the shoot, Albert’s words came to mind... I used to agree with him, so I ought to empathize... The form of the tower peering indistinctly from the falling rain; it seemed to hint at the road Belka will head down in the future. July 18, 1994
Photographed by Claus Bauer On this day nearing completion, the military’s top brass brought politicians and corporate executives to the base for a visit. I accompanied them to carry out my photography duties. Approaching this awesome tower that stood above the landscape, they couldn’t hide their amazement. Everyone expressed their pleasure at the completion with praise and applause. I heard the following words while continuing to shoot: “Excalibur” - that seems to be the code name for this monumental iron tower. Appearing as a great sword that pierces the earth, there’s no way a cameraman like me can know just what its destructive power is, and in any case I can only pray the day does not come when we find out. They say that the weapon will be tested soon; all I can think is that we’ll be lucky if it doesn't become the trigger which beckons chaos to our country.
