International Space ElevatorBackgroundRavaged by Ulysses and the Continental War, the latter half of the 00's saw Usea continue to fall towards economic collapse. Though the refugee crisis was the primary catalyst for the conflict, the war brought no resolution to the masses of displaced people throughout the continent, still left without homes or jobs. Infrastructure damage inflicted during the war caused major power shortages throughout the continent that further inhibited economic growth. Fraught with these issues, the Continental Nations' Economic Alliance that had grown to encompass all of Usea (with the exception of Erusea) during the war fractured, as member states left to pursue their own policies. Relatively unaffected by the Circum-Pacific War, the Osean Federation under President Harling's administration was eager to lead reconstruction efforts in Usea. Harling had already pledged to reintegrate Erusea with the global community, and had spearheaded international efforts to clear Ulysses debris and build space infrastructure. The International Space Elevator would be a natural progression of Osea's globalist foreign policy and fulfill more of Harling's space development ambitions, while addressing the pressing issues on the Usea continent. OverviewThe ISEV Corporation was founded in 2011 with a major investment of capital and technology transfer from Osea. In order to better stimulate economic growth in Usea, it employed local nationals from throughout the continent for two-month contracts. After gaining skills and knowledge from their time working with ISEV, they could better take part in other reconstruction efforts throughout the continent. As of 2018, over 100,000 workers had been employed by ISEV, despite only 1,000 working at the site at any given time.
A construction ship was constructed in LEO (Low Earth Orbit), and the first cable was launched to it January of 2013. The ship reached GEO (Geostationary Earth Orbit, 36,000km) in May and began lowering the cable while continuing to climb. The cable reached Earthport in September while the construction craft continued climbing up to 96,000km, where it would permanently serve as a counterweight. The elevator was usable in this state, however it had an extremely low carriage capacity. Further reinforcement via additional cables was carried out using the cable seeding method. A climber was sent up to deploy a second cable, and the process repeated until six cables were in place, ultimately allowing for 24 climbers to be used simultaneously, carrying up to 100 tons each.
